Greetings from Jennifer Ross -  Realtor
CanoeAnother fun outing and great bang for the buck... University of San Diego has outdoor adventures put on by their students.  I tried a couple of their group canoe trips to Humphreys on Shelter Island to hear concerts.  If you are a visual person, forget it!  You can only see a glimpse of the band from down on the water.  However, the sound is great and the rowing on the harbor at night is fantastic!  The cost is $20. and canoe, snacks and  a guide are provided.  Ringo Starr and Credence Clearwater REVISITED are coming in August.  This is a  really fun outing with a group of friends.  Dress warm and bring plenty of padding for the bottom of the canoe!
News and Views
San Diego continues to be a shining light in the residential real estate market. The Case-Shiller Home Price Index released this morning showed that prices were up 1.1 percent from month-to-month and are up 12.4 percent from May 2009.
The June New Home Sales report showed that sales rose more than 23 percent, well above expectations. Of key interest in the report was news that the inventory of new homes for sale fell from 9.6 months in May to 7.6 months last month. With little new housing construction in the pipeline, this is likely to become an issue for next year and beyond.
Mortgage rates fell for the 10th time in the last 13 weeks, tying a record low.  The benchmark 30-year fixed-rate mortgage fell to 4.74 percent, according to the national survey of large lenders. The benchmark 15-year fixed-rate mortgage fell 5 basis points, to 4.18 percent.
5 Decor Trends To Reconsider
They weren't always wrong. Many of these trends looked great in a glossy photo but translated poorly to everyday life. Others are already on the way out. To help you take the guesswork out of updating your decor, we took a hard look at some of the hottest recent trends and whipped up this list of the bad, the ugly, and the better-in-theory.
Inspirational Sayings
Why Skip It: "Keep Calm and Carry On" is an admirable sentiment, but it's become the '00s equivalent of those "Hang In There, Baby" cat posters from the '70s. In other words, it's time to let it go. Also included in the "do not want" category? Lettered wall decals with homespun homilies about friendship, clouds, or dreams. Put it this way: Not everyone wants to learn a lesson every time they drop by.
Decorative Buddha Sculptures
Why Skip It: Sure, they're jolly, and their little bellies are hard to resist. But Buddha decor, part of the "Zen Retreat" trend that made family rooms all over America resemble the inside of Gwyneth Paltrow's yoga studio, is now pretty passe. In short: Buddha statues are religious symbols, not kitschy garden gnomes.
Ghost Chairs
Why Skip It: We know. We love them too. But they've lost their novelty, their ability to surprise. Plus they scratch easily. Out of all the trends on this list, we're most hoping these make a quick comeback. Until then, let them vanish into the night -- or at least the attic.
Accent Walls
Why Skip It: When all-white rooms were in fashion, one brightly painted or wallpapered wall was a great way to break up the monotony. But now, with bolder paint colors the norm, accent walls have less purpose and can break up the flow of a room. Plus, what was once an unpredictable pop of color is now, well...predictable.
Boutique Hotel Chic
Why Skip It: The stiff minimalism, the dull neutrals, the oppressive uniformity. Where's the personality? Do we all really want to look like we live in a W hotel suite circa 2002? Conclusion: Modern luxury is all about ultra-unique pieces, so ditch the cookie cutter.
